November Update

Image: A slide from the OLC Workshop on Podcasting from October 27, 2025.

OLC productions picked up speed in October as the 2025-2026 school year got underway. In October, Brian and Joe delivered a workshop on how to use and assign Podcasting in any class, and had a great discussion about multimodal (and evolving!) pedagogy with faculty who attended. Our Parent Child Institute videos in support of Barbara Mowder’s unit began their journey through the IRB process on their way to the experimental delivery to parents.

We continued collaborations to promote online degree programs (Cybersecurity and Homeland Security), also began collaborating with Bernard Dufresne on the development of a Title XI workshop for all Pace students, staff, and faculty.

Production in October

  • 20 hours of consultations with faculty and staff in CHP, Dyson, The Office of Institutional Excellence, Pace Online, and Seidenberg.
  • • 31 video produced (474 minutes total); 6 additional edited cuts.

Production Tip of the month: Use Google’s NotebookLM (soon to be integrated into Gemini) to create simple “podcast-style” interview shows from text and other web-based resources.

Please contact OLC staff to reserve studio time or collaborate with us.

Podcasting in Your Courses: Tips for Assigning, Assessing, and Producing Podcasts

Vi

Video: OLC Faculty Workshop on “Assigning, Creating, and Assessing Podcasting in Courses” hosted by the Brian Hughes and Joe Seijo on Monday, October 27, 2025.

Podcasting can be a great hands-on learning opportunity, and courses benefit from creative and engaging activities. In this webinar, we explored several use cases for podcasting, which can add multimodal and hands-on learning to any course. Use or modify our production guides and rubrics for use in your courses:

Transcription

Your students submitted 10+ hours of podcasts… now what!?! Transcription. There are several options available for students and faculty to create transcriptions from audio files. The main options are Panopto and YouTube, depending on preference. In both applications, it is the text file used in Closed Captioning that provides the owner with a timecode text file.

In Panopto, after uploading you audio file (and waiting a minute or two for the system to process it), go to Settings > Captions > Available Captions > English to download a .txt file.

In YouTube, after uploading you audio file (and waiting a minute or two for the system to process it), go to YouTube Studio > Content > (click the Edit icon on a video) > Language > (click the Edit button by English) > select “Download .srt” under the “Automatic subtitles” menu.

Student Facilities

The OLC is for Pace faculty and staff. But students have access to multimedia facilities on both NYC and PLV campuses:

In NYC, the CMS Podcast Lab (512 Park Row) has several podcasting workstations available to all Pace students. Find the sign-up calendar here.

In Pleasantville, the Media and Communication Arts Department makes a podcast recording facility available to students. Learn how to book the studio here.

On both campuses, ITS computer labs with Macs have Adobe CC applications including Audition, Adobe’s professional audio editing application. This may be useful for more advanced students, or students looking to take editing seriously!

Production Tip of the month: You can do a lot with a great audio recording. Try recording your lecture first, then adding graphics afterwards.

April Update

  • Brian (on camera) works with Sands professors Nora and Anne to capture senior showcase (BA Acting) performances.

March was a busy month in the studios on both campuses. In NYC, we began our annual collaboration with Sands faculty to record BA Acting seniors’ monologues and scenes. It’s so much fun to see the actors work their magic in the studio! In PLV, we worked with English faculty to support graduating seniors by creating professional resume video briefs (“elevator pitches”)—a writing and performance assignment, but hopefully also a professional boost!

Don’t miss the latest episode of How to Be A College Superstar (find it on our YouTube channel). Congrats to OLC Student Assistant AJ on developing a set of great interviews, and for experimenting with our NYC studio configuration.

Media Production in March

  • 32 hours of consultations with faculty and staff in Dyson, PESP, Sands, and Seidenberg.
  • • 46 videos produced (308 minutes total); 41 additional edited cuts.

Pace Online Graduation: Recording with Zoom

Hello Pace Online Commencement Speakers!

We are asking speakers to record their speeches for the Pace Online graduation website. This will be a public website, so you are consenting to the publication of your video by participating. Please email us your video by Friday, May 2nd.

Please record your speech in Zoom. Please review these Zoom settings before you hit record:

  • Video: Select “HD;” use Zoom’s “Clips” tool to make a quick video.
  • Recording: use “Local Recording” so you can easily upload the file to our Dropbox or Google Drive (paceolc@gmail.com).
  • Lighting: If you have a ring light or desk lamp, use it in addition to other room lighting. Face toward a window, if you can, but definitely don’t turn your back to one!
  • Sound: Try your best to eliminate background noise.
  • Framing: To eliminate distortion, your camera should be at the same height as your nose. If you have a laptop, try resting it on a box.
  • Edits: No editing necessary! We will broadcast your speech as if you are delivering it live. However, Pace staff will trim the beginning and end of your file. Don’t worry about an awkward start or finish!
  • Questions? Or would you like remote assistance? Reach out to Pace staff at OLC@pace.edu. We’re happy to help!

Delivery

When you have finished your recording, please share your file with the Pace Online team with either Google Drive (paceolc@gmail.com) or Dropbox (paceolc@gmail.com). Thank you!

Please reach out to Online Learning Center staff at OLC@pace.edu if you have any questions. Good luck!
